An historical monument for Matsutaro and Hatsume Kawaguchi, the parents of Ellen Tanaka and Harold Kawaguchi, was installed outside the Fairmont Mausoleum on Fri, Aug 22nd at Fairmount Memorial Cemetery. Kawaguchi Children: Arthur, Ellen and Harold This originated when local historian Ty Brown learned about Matsutaro and Hatsume while he was writing his book Along the Little Spokane River. Ty was deeply moved by them and their accomplishments and wanted to honor them in some way. He made a presentation before the Spokane Historical Monuments Committee and they were impressed. The committee agreed to place a monument in their honor. Only a small number of distinguished individuals have been honored with a monument in their name. They are the first Japanese Americans to be lauded with this recognition at Fairmont Memorial Cemetery. For more, see local coverage by Krem 2 and The Spokesman-Review. Comments are closed.
